Barnum 664
It was decided at last year's AGM that the roof should be repaired to the same standard as 228. That is a strip of all water gutters and roof stretchers followed by roof sanding, hard boarding, painting, application of a canvas roof, fitting of new stretchers and refitting water gutters.
It sounds easy if you say it quick enough, however, after discovery that the stetchers has all been last fixed with steel screws rather than brass ones its has turned into a bit of a job. The stetchers also have been reused at least 3 times previously and are more full of filler than wood in places. Add to a large period of volunteer unavailability it has dragged somewhat.
We also did manage to conduct a trial on the finishing of the teak matchboard. Due to the use of steel fixings in its BR days the teak matchboard is quite badly stained on this vehicle. A blind test was conducted with a water based teak stain being contratsted against teak oil for this temporary finish. All agreed that the stain gave better results of covering over some of the rust staining without the wood looking too dark. So when the time comes we know what we will be using.
664 Roof Progress
However, the current status is that brass screw fixed water gutters have been delicately removed from the south side. It was decided to replace the stetchers so these were removed in a more robust manner with as much saved as practical.
The south side of the carriage is now stripped and work has commenced on the north side, now that access is clear.
