Under the umbrella of the Greater Great Central, the Trust is joining fellow Great Central Railway related organisations at the York Railfest 200 from Saturday 29th May to 6th June.
Dedicated to the saving and restoring of former G.C.R. vehicles and now with 9 former G.C.R. carriages in its charge, dating from 1888 to 1910, the Trust is revealing how it intends to beat neglect, vandals and years of exposure to the weather in outside storage, with an exciting build project at Ruddington, the home of Great Central Railway (Nottingham).
The first stage is a restoration facility where the carriages can be taken apart and rebuilt to near original G.C.R. condition - mostly varnished teak and gleaming brass, or in the early paint schemes of dark oak and French grey for the 6 wheelers and cream and dark oak for the suburban and clerestory types.
The new facility which is to be built as a simple steel frame structure with flat roof is expected to accommodate four 63 ft. carriages, either four Barnums or a combination of the smaller as the work programme requires. Work is currently in hand on three vehicles, No. 946, a 6 wheeler, No. 228 a Barnum saloon and the clerestory body 1st/2nd/brake about to be united with a 57 ft. running chassis.
As with all projects in the heritage railway sector, there is an urgent need for funds. Support is asked for the largest private collection of pre-Grouping carriages from one company, the G.C.R.
