Of the L.D.E.C.R. , Mr Thom, was partly responsible for the class. His design of L.D.E.C. 0-6-4T, class D, was used to base the 1B upon. These large tank engines, class 1B were not as successful as Robinson would have wished, but they performed usefully on pick-up goods, shunting and banking trains. The last survivors were withdrawn in 1955.
