These locomotives were the result of co-operation between Thomas Parker of the M.S.L. and locomotive builders, Kitsons. 25 examples of the class 2 were built between 1887 and 1892. They were used on the company’s express trains and were the first M.S.L. 4-4-0 with inside frames. Later, they worked secondary services. 6 very similar class 2A engines were built in 1894. Classes 2 and 2A eventually became class D7 of the L.N.E.R.

There is currently an initiative to rebuild a new Class 2 from a number of donor parts including an original, but modified GCR tender, an unused Austerity cylinder block and ex Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway 4-4-0 boiler (that is still available). However, serious consideration is being made to using all new components, some of which are similar to other new build projects.

The project is seeking to establish a team to manage and deliver the construction of the locomotive. Expressions of interest by individuals are sought for the establishment of the team.

Managers, treasurers, fundraisers & those with manufacturing expertise needed, could you help?

G.C. Innovations

Safety-first:  anti-telescoping buffers and interlocking devices, introduced in 1915 by the G.C.R. were a pioneering safety feature on British trains.

Anti-telescoping device (1915)

Although adding 2 tons to the tare weight of each coach, and becoming standard on the company's passenger stock, these innovative devices were never tested in a real collision.
